The WSO was founded in 1947, and numbers amongst its past conductors Maurice Handford,
Tim Reynish and Martin Hardy. It was chosen by Making Music for its debut concert at the Bridgewater Hall. Highlights of recent years have included Copland's Symphony No 3, Shostakovich's Symphony No 7 , Strauss' Alpine Symphony, Prokoviev's 6th Symphony and Mahler's 6th, 7th and 2nd Symphonies as well as more familiar pieces.
In the last few years most of our concerts have been conducted by Mark Robinson and Peter Stallworthy and our leader is Louise Latham.
A number of well-known soloists have appeared with the orchestra.
We have also been host to guest conductors from the United
States, including
Thomas Anderson
from De Kalb Symphony Orchestra, Atlanta and the American composer Linda Robbins Coleman.
